Rehab Lab Team: Compassionate Experts for Your Recovery

In a joint initiative with INAIL (National Institute of Insurance against Accidents at Work), the REHAB Laboratory develops high-tech prosthetic, orthotic and rehabilitative medical devices. The laboratories provide a complete service from design to production of individualized assistive devices for people with disabilities in all healthcare settings.

Physiology students in the CAPh Lab coordinate and lead an annual event that engages second graders from Tippin Elementary School in activities designed to increase their understanding of basic physiological concepts. Last year, BS-RHSC seniors led this effort and are preparing to do so again in the fall.

To help therapists better assess their patients, Carilion will pilot an initiative that has patients wear unintrusive, waterproof kinetic sensors, such as those worn as watches or rings. These will track their movements throughout the day, providing therapists with data on daily activity they can’t always observe themselves. The sensors and analysis algorithms are the product of a collaboration between Alan Asbeck’s Assistive Robotics Lab at Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh-based Lifeware Labs, and wireless@VT, directed by Michael Buehrer.
