The smell of rotten meat is one of the most distinct and unpleasant odors, and it is an indication that the meat is no longer safe for consumption. The meat has undergone a process of spoilage which has led to the production of cadaverine, putrescine and other amines which cause the offensive smell. If the smell is overpowering, it is a good idea to throw away the meat, as eating it can cause food poisoning symptoms such as nausea, diarrhoea, fever and abdominal pain.
A more advanced remove rotten meat odor of spoilage is characterized by an ammonia-like scent which is unmistakable and indicates significant bacterial growth and protein breakdown in the meat. A slimy texture on the meat also indicates the presence of harmful bacteria.
When removing the spoiled meat, be sure to discard any juices and residue from the container as well. Clean the refrigerator, drawers and shelves where the rotten meat was stored with a solution of bleach (sodium hypochlorite, ceNaClO) and water. Then wipe the surfaces down with a diluted solution of vinegar (one part water to two parts vinegar).
Be sure to remove any other food from the fridge or freezer, as the odors will permeate the plastic and possibly other foods. If the freezer is still smelling strong, close it and use a fan to blow air in and out for as long as possible to flush out the odors. Alternatively, you can try a commercial refrigerator deodorizer or a commercial range hood that’sucks’ odors out of the air using activated carbon.
